Hangingstone Quarry

OS ref. SK 526151 (Sheet 129)
SITUATION and CHARACTER

Hangingstone Quarry is a disused slate quarry on the grounds of Charnwood Forest Golf Club. There are 13 routes all bolt protected with grades ranging from F5 through to F7a+ There are two walls in the quarry; the back wall and the side wall. The routes on the side wall follow well defined lines with full height grooves and arêtes along the whole wall whereas those on the back wall are less featured and follow less defined lines. The climbing on both walls is good.

APPROACH and ACCESS
The quarry is situated 500m north west of Woodhouse Eaves, in the south east corner of the golf course. It is best to park at the Bulls Head to avoid any unwanted attention from the people who live opposite the field you have to cross. Walk down Brook Lane (opposite the Bulls Head) for 400m to a track on the left between high hedges. The track leads to a field, cross the field keeping to the left. The quarry is in the woodland in front of you. Hop over the fence and work your way right-wards through the undergrowth and a track will be found from the golf course leading into the quarry.
Climbers are advised to keep a low profile and to try not to attract any attention as the golf club have made it clear that they don’t under any circumstances permit climbing on there land. If you are caught climbing you will be asked to leave, don’t make a fuss and risk making the access situation any worse than it already is, leave quietly.
